Then the drunken rioters proceeded southeast toward Fair Hill, the home of Priestley. On the continuation of the 1795 map, one can see the road proceeding to Stratford (35 km southwests) which passed right by Fair Hill. (One today knows Stratford more commonly by Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare). The source of the drunkenness of the rioters is suggested by an example of a brewery on the map; there were many pubs along the way to fuel the spirits of the marauding crowds. Indeed much fuel was needed; the march was some 2 km further from the New Meeting Church.
